For many athletes, the off-season or pre-season can feel like a lull in their competitive calendar. But what if this downtime became an opportunity to explore new challenges, build fitness in exciting ways, and rediscover the joy of movement? Alternative races and endurance adventures are the perfect way to shake up your routine while having fun, building community, and staying race-ready. Here at NYX Endurance, we’re thrilled to highlight some of the innovative events our athletes are tackling this winter and spring of 2025.
Why Alternative Races Are Worth It
1. Break Out of the Routine: Training for the same types of events year after year can become monotonous. Alternative races introduce fresh challenges, keeping your enthusiasm alive while improving your mental resilience.
2. Build New Skills: Whether it’s trail running, cycling, swimming, or climbing, these events often push you outside your comfort zone. They challenge your versatility and can improve your overall athleticism.
3. Fun and Community: Many of these races prioritize camaraderie and creativity over strict competition. They’re about exploring, bonding, and celebrating what your body can do—perfect for the off-season mindset.
4. Pre-Season Fitness Boost: These events are a low-stakes way to maintain endurance, strength, and mental toughness while bridging the gap between seasons.
Exciting Alternative Races to Try
Here’s a glimpse of what some of our NYX Endurance athletes have done or are planning!
1. Breckebeiner / USAT Winter Nationals (Winter 2025): Combining cross-country skiing, fat biking, and running, this event is the ultimate test of winter endurance.
2. Backyard Ultra: This event is as much about mental resilience as physical endurance. Athletes run a 4.167-mile loop every hour until only one person remains. It’s a grueling yet oddly meditative experience that teaches pacing, patience, and grit.
3. “24-Hour Booty Loop”: Whether you tackle it solo or as part of a team, this cycling event is a celebration of endurance and community. Pedal for 24 hours and see how far you can go—it’s as much about the journey as the distance.
4. Rim2Rim2Rim – Grand Canyon: This iconic ultra-run takes athletes across the Grand Canyon and back, offering jaw-dropping vistas and a truly epic challenge. It’s a bucket-list adventure for any trail runner.
5. Wonderland Trail Circumnavigation: Encircling Mount Rainier, this 93-mile trail run (or fast hike) is an unforgettable way to immerse yourself in nature while testing your limits.
6. Mount Blue Sky Hill Climb: A lung-busting ascent that rewards you with incredible views and an unmatched sense of accomplishment. Hill climbs like this are perfect for building power and mental fortitude.
7. St. Kitts Swim (Island to Island): This open-water challenge is an exotic way for triathletes and swimmers to stay sharp in the off-season. Swimming between islands adds an adventurous twist to your training.
8. Gravel Races: Athletes can experience the thrill of riding on gravel roads through stunning landscapes while testing their endurance in a less conventional setting. Whether you’re racing solo or with friends, gravel races provide a perfect blend of adventure and competition.
9. Everesting: Pick your favorite hill and climb it repeatedly until you’ve reached the height of Mount Everest—29,029 feet. This challenge is brutal but deeply rewarding for cyclists and runners alike.
10. 4.4.24 Running Event: A unique test of consistency and stamina—run 4 miles every 4 hours for 24 hours. It’s a surprisingly social and satisfying way to push your limits.
11. Swim Meets: Participating in local swim meets is an excellent way for swimmers to maintain their competitive edge. These meets provide an opportunity to refine technique, practice race strategies, and engage with fellow athletes in a spirited environment. Whether it’s a short sprint or a long-distance event, swim meets can help sharpen your skills in the water while keeping your training lively and engaging.
