what to read / watch / listen to:
Coach Alison:
Read: Beartown
I absolutely tore through this book, but I am also a sucker for any good drama that’s intertwined with sports. I would describe this as Friday Night Lights except Sweden not Texas and hockey not football. And if you love it as much as I did, it’s the first in a three-part series.
Watch: A Good Person, starring Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman. It’s raw and powerful and heart-wrenching and sticks with you.
Listen to: My new walk out / final mile song, X Gon’ Give It To Ya by DMX, which recently replaced my prior long-standing pick of Hello by Martin Solveig. I’m not sure if my kids are embarrassed by or impressed with the switch.
athlete win of the month:
Coach Shana: Erika DaRonco
Erika DaRonco has been steadily increasing her bike mileage as part of an organized cycling program with Black Girls Do Bike. Last weekend they took on a group challenge to ride the San Diego Gran Fondo – Piccolo Route. Although it had more climbing than Erika had been doing, she conquered it and set a new FTP/Threshold Power on her bike in the process!

- Favorite race: After 8 years of triathlon I’m still a runner at heart and my favorite race is the Boston Marathon. Every year that I’m not there I wish I were. My favorite triathlon so far was the 2021 Ironman 70.3 Santa Cruz. My first race with an ocean swim, magical foggy morning, beautiful ride along the coast, and then a sunny finish in the sand on the beach.
- Walk-out song: My Shot by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It’s my reminder not to sell myself short on race day.
- 3 Words that family/friends would use to describe you: Dependable, funny, generous
- Worst style choice you’ve ever made: That 80s perm. Yikes.
- If you could have an unlimited supply of 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Time.
