Navigating the Holidays: A Triathlete’s Guide to Surviving the Season

Ah, the holiday season! A magical time filled with joy, family, and an ungodly amount of food. Don’t panic, fellow athletes! With a little strategy, some festive humor, and maybe a yoga mat to hide under, you really can survive the season of too little time and too much food.

Eat, Drink, and Train Like a Champion

First, let’s face the obvious truth: the holidays are made for stretchy pants. From turkey to mashed potatoes to Aunt Edna’s infamous fruitcake (which you’ll pretend to like out of sheer politeness), it’s hard to resist. But here’s the good news: you can indulge without sabotaging your fitness goals.

Holiday Treats as Fuel: Picture that slice of pumpkin pie as performance-enhancing fuel. Who needs electrolytes when you’ve got sugar from pie coursing through your veins? The energy boost is real and you’ll needthose carbs when you get back to your trainer. Plus you can always balance out that cookie out by surrounding it with some protein and veggies.

Finding Balance in the Midst of Chaos

Here’s your secret weapon: flexibility. Your training plan isn’t a sacred text — it’s a suggestion. You don’t have to be a slave to your routine; this is the season of family and food, after all.

Incorporate Family Into Your Workouts: Why not kill two birds with one stone? Go for a “brisk” post-dinner walk, or start a family-friendly (read: everyone loses) game of touch football. Or, up the ante by challenging relatives to a “who can do the most burpees” contest. Warning: Uncle Bob will be way too competitive, but at least you’ll work off some of that pie while you dodge his unsolicited advice about your training regimen.

Quality Over Quantity: Remember, it’s not about grinding away for hours. It’s about quality time with your loved ones, even if that just means collapsing on the couch in a food coma and binge-watching holiday movies. If you miss a workout or two, don’t sweat it. This is when you can be present.

Relieve Family Stress Through Training (Or Escape with a Sneaky Run)

Let’s be honest: family gatherings can be stressful. Training can be the perfect stress buster. Step outside for a quick run or bike ride and call it your “training mission.” Your goal? Keep your sanity intact long enough to make it through dessert without launching into reliving your last race, your HRV or your training stats, since nobody cares other than your coach cares but he or she is not at the holiday table.

Keep Your Sense of Humor

And above all, laugh. The holidays are full of absurd moments that are basically begging for a chuckle. Like when you accidentally show up to a workout in a sweater that looks like it came straight from Santa’s wardrobe, or when your family still thinks “triathlon” is a fancy new type of pizza topping. Keep the mood light and roll with it.

At the end of the day, the holidays are about making memories, sharing joy, and maybe eating one (or twelve) too many cookies. So go ahead, treat yourself, enjoy the festivities, and make sure your training is as fun as it is effective. After all, the best fuel for a triathlete isn’t just pie and cookies — it’s laughter, love, and maybe a well-timed burpee or two.

Happy Holidays, and may your training (and your family gatherings) be full of joy, laughter, and just enough calories to keep you going!
